Fireworks, athletes and pageantry on a scale never before seen in the Olympics opened the Summer Games in Beijing on Friday, as the Asian nation kicked off the biggest and most scrutinized Games in history.
Delegations from Afghanistan, Taiwan, North Korea and the United States were welcomed by huge cheers.
China has put a priority on finishing first in the overall medal standings.

BEIJING (Reuters) - Resurgent China opened the Olympics on Friday with volleys of fireworks at a spectacular ceremony that wove ancient Chinese history with modern wizardry and aimed to draw a line under months of political controversy.
There were also big cheers for the United States, North Korea and Iraq, and a thunderous applause for Taiwan, signaling a further sign of a thaw after years of icy relations.

The 2008 Olympic Games were launched at a dazzling ceremony in Beijing, as athletes from more than 200 countries gathered in the Bird's Nest stadium.
The procession of athletes took place with nations appearing according to the number of brush strokes required to write each country's name in Chinese.
Team GB therefore became the 115th team to enter the arena, with Australia - traditionally third into the arena by alphabetical order - appearing third last.
